Food and drink affect how well you feel on dialysis. Your renal team sets your own limits. A dietitian can help you plan meals.
Fluids
Your kidneys may make little or no urine. Water then builds up between sessions. Too much water can cause swelling, high blood pressure and breathing problems.
- Follow the fluid limit that your renal team gives you.
- Count soups, tea and porridge as fluid.
- Weigh yourself at the same time each day.
Salt
Salt makes you thirsty. Ask your renal team how much salt is safe for you.
Potassium and phosphate
Some foods are high in potassium or phosphate. High levels can be dangerous on dialysis. Your monthly blood tests show your levels. Ask your renal team which foods to limit.
Protein
Dialysis removes some protein. Your renal team tells you how much protein you need.
Medicines
Take your medicines as your doctor prescribes them. Do not take herbal or over-the-counter medicines before you ask your doctor.
Do not change your diet because of this guide alone. Ask your renal team first.
