You can travel on haemodialysis. You need to plan early. Many units have few free chairs.

Four weeks or more before you travel

  1. Choose a unit near the place you will stay. Use our holiday dialysis tool.
  2. Contact the unit. Ask if it has a chair on your dates.
  3. Ask the price for each session and if the unit accepts SHA for you.
  4. Ask the unit for its list of documents.

Documents to ask your home unit for

  • Your recent blood results.
  • Your hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV status, with the test date.
  • Your dialysis prescription.
  • Your dry weight and your usual session length.
  • Your list of medicines.
  • Your access type (fistula, graft or catheter).

Take with you

  • Your SHA details or your insurance card.
  • Enough medicines for the whole trip, and some extra.
  • The name and phone number of your home unit.

On the day

Arrive early for your first session. The unit may need to check your documents and weigh you.
