What a transplant is

A surgeon puts a healthy kidney from a donor into your body. The new kidney does the work of your failed kidneys. Most transplants in Kenya use a kidney from a living donor.

Who may have one

Your nephrologist and the transplant team decide if a transplant is safe for you. They check your heart, your general health and any infections.

The donor

A living donor gives one kidney. The transplant team tests the donor carefully. The team also explains the donor rules.

After the transplant

  • You take medicines every day for life. They stop your body from rejecting the kidney.
  • You go to regular check-ups and blood tests.
  • You may not need dialysis while the new kidney works.
